Changes in Formula 1 Safety (posted by M.V.J 21)

Changes in Formula 1 Safety,

It has always been a major issue for the formula one teams and the people in the world of formula 1 but now it has become a major issue after the latest crash in the grand prix of japan (Suzuka), the driver who crashed is Jules Bianchi driving for team Marrusia (this f1 team has had other bad crashes which questioned them) the crash occurred in a corner which was wet because of the rain which reduced the visibility of the driver and one lap before there had been a crash, that car was being removed from the track with a crane this crane should have been standing behind the tyre wall but it was standing in front of the tyre wall, Jules Bianchi crashed into the crane and the tyre wall. Jules bianchi crashed into the crane at a high speed and totally out of control he crashed under the crane and hited the tyre wall this cause severe damage to his car and to Jules Bianchi, still in the hospital in a critical but stable situation with brain injuries the worst brain injury that can be caused to the human brain.
This crash is now under investigation by the FIA and team leaders, formula 1 has been shocked by this latest crash, questions which appeared after the crash are: why wasn’t their a safety car? Why was the crane inside the track? Why were the stewards waving green flags instead of yellow flags? Why wasn’t the race stopped because of the bad weather conditions? Who is responsible for the crash?
All this is relevant for the investigation of the crash but furthermore the problem is what has to change to avoid this type of crashes?
In my opinion they must change the position of the driver in the car and create a F1 car with a closed cockpit, to avoid that the pilot is the first one to hit an object when they have a crash or maybe increase the distance between the nose of the car and the drivers cockpit. This is not a new issue which concerns the FIA and the Formula one teams but now they must change something to avoid this crashes and damage to the driver.
What would you change would you apply to the formula 1 car if you were the FIA?

  1. I don't know enough about the technical specifications of the cars, but I imagine that the changes that you are suggesting will affect a lot of elements, such as the speed. I think the question is whether to prioritize safety over efficiency and I assume there are a lot of people who will have strong opinions about prioritizing either one. F1 is a risky sport and in the end it is up to the drivers to decide whether to take the risk or not, however I do agree that changes need to be made to reduce the amount of accidents. I just hope they are able to do that without reducing the excitement of the sport.

  3. Is the point here that the crane was in violation of existing safety regulations by being on the wrong side of the wall ? If so, the challenge must be to not change the safety requirements but enforce the existing ones no ?

  4. I think it is part from the sport. As Sara said above, F1 is a risky sport where drivers reach at some point the speed of more or less 320km/h. Unfortunately, accidents happen and it is sad. I agree with the fact that some changes need to be made and decisions need to be taken considering the securities of the drivers and the tracks. Is there any new ways of any ideas taken by FIA in order to reduce the amount of accidents?
